St. Catherine’s overcame the challenge of Fr. O’Neill’s in the first round of the newly introduced County Premier two minor hurling championship when played in ideal conditions at Youghal on Sunday afternoon last. Brian Mulcahy and James Neville for the Saints and the ever accurate William Joyce for the opposition traded points. Amidst a melee of players William Walsh was credited with the vital touch and crucial score of the contest, his goal on twenty seven minutes setting up a half time lead on a scoreline of 1-04 to 0-05. In an evenly contested second half hour when keeper Edmund Aherne had to be alert making one smart stop parity was restored at 1-08 to 0-11 on fifty eight minutes. But two well taken pointed frees by Mulcahy secured a narrow 1-10 to 0-11 win for the saints, confirming a two point win over the same opposition in a divisional fourteen “B” final at Killeagh four years ago.
Back to back defeats for the Saints from their opening two matches in the Star Homes sponsored Junior Hurling League Division Two . An awesome ten point contribution by Michael Hegarty wasn’t enough to rescue the situation when going down by 0-14 to 0-11 to Sars 2 in the first match on Tuesday night, April 14th last.
While a Cloyne team with a sprinkling of senior panelists like Graham Fleming, Colm O’Sullivan, David Ring (0-09) and Victor Cusack (2-03) were too strong when winning a round four encounter again at Ballynoe on Sunday morning last. Kevin Mangan was top scorer for the home side registering 1-02. But overall a better balanced opposition were convincing 2-18 to 1-08 winners at the finish.
With championship fast approaching St. Catherine’s continued their preparation when overcoming Shamrocks in an Intermediate hurling challenge at Knockanore on Saturday evening last. A competitive and evenly contested affair for the major part it was only in the final ten minutes with points from Damien Farrell, Richard O’Connell, Michael Hegarty and Junior Sheehan that the Saints were able to confirm a winning score line of 0-19 to 0-12. A reminder that St. Catherine’s play Premier Intermediate hurling championship in Caherlag on Thursday evening April 30th, with a 7pm throw in.
