U21 Hurlers progress toSemi Final

 

U21 A Hurling Championship

 

Castlelyons 0-`18v Sarsfields 1-12

 

            The Castlelyons U21 had a wellearned win over Sarsfields in the first round of the championship at Rathcormacon Saturday 11th August.  Thegame was played at Rathcormac.

 

            Sarsfields made all the running inthe opening five minutes of the game and led three points to nothing.  In the sixth minute Anthony Spillane scoredthe first point from a free.  Colmfollowed with a point from play in the eight minute.  The equalising point came in the thirteenthminute, when Robert Feeney won a ball and let it off to Anthony Spillane and heput it over.

 

            The sides exchanged points fromfrees in the next two minutes. Castlelyons were now playing well and out scored Sars by five points totwo during the second quarter.  The scoreat half time was Castlelyons 0-11 to Sarsfields 0-6.

 

            Sarsfields were very much on theoffensive for the third quarter and after an opening attack in the first minutewon a sixty five metre free, which was put over the bar.  Ronan Fenton put over a point in the eightminute and Sars than went on to score four unanswered points by the fifteenthminute.  Only a single point nowseparated the teams.

 

            Darren Tobin and Colm Spillane puttingover a point each extended the lead to three points.  Then in the twenty second minute Sars brokethrough to score the only goal of the game. The sides were now level.

 

            A free a minute later allowedAnthony Spillane to take the lead for Castlelyons again and a minute laterDarren Tobin extended it to two points. The last two scores of the game were points from substitutes Alan Fentonand Ronan Bransfield.

 

            This was a tightly contested gameand Castlelyons had to work hard to get the win.  The defence did well and Shane O’Sullivan ingoals had some fine saves.

Junior HurlingLeague, Div 3.

 

Castlelyons 5-15v Castlemartyr 0-06        

 

            The Junior Hurling team playedCastlemartyr in Div 3 of the League on Monday 13th July away. 

 

            Castlelyonsopened the scoring with three points in the first five minutes.  Castlemartyr followed with two points fromfrees and these were the only scores concede by the Castlelyons defence in thefirst half.

 

            Castlelyonswent on to score a further four goals and five points before the break.  Shane Hickey was responsible for the firsttwo goals; the second came from a good clean ground stroke.  Alan O’Regan and Chris Cotter put the secondtwo in.  The score at half time was 4-5to 0-2 in favour of Castlelyons.

 

            Castlelyonscontinued to ber on top for the second half and finished very comfortablewinners.  In all eight playersscored.  There were fifteen wides andseven frees were won.  The defence workedwell and David Kenny in goals did a good job.
