Sat 11 Aug S F C Aghada 0-8 O'Donovan Rossa's 1-8

Aghada bowed out of this year’s senior football championship, going down to O Donovan Rossa in rain swept Brinny last Saturday night. On the night Aghada didn’t play at their best, but could still reflect on both goal and point chances missed that could have gotten them the result. Ger Melvin opened the scoring on the night with a pointed free on 8 minutes after John O’Connor was pulled down. The Skibbereen men however answered with interest a couple of minutes later when a long ball over the top was latched onto by their corner forward who toe poked home the goal that was to be between the sides at the final whistle. This was after 10 minutes. Aghada responded well to this set back. Cian Fleming pointed a free after Trevor O’Keeffe was fouled and then Kieran O’Connor put Pearse O’Neill through on goal, but he sliced wide with the ‘keeper to beat. A couple of minutes later Aghada split the defence open again, to create another goal chance for Michael Russell, but he fired wide under pressure. Skibbereen pointed on 21 minutes for their second score, before O’Keeffe put Russell in for a similar score on 26 minutes. As the short whistle approached, Rossa’s pointed again. From the kickout, Aghada broke through for their 3rd goal chance. Again it was O’Neill driving up the middle, before off loading to midfielder Eoin Healy, who stumbled as he received the pass and was forced to fist the ball, which floated just outside the post. At half time having played against the wind, Aghada were 2 points down on a 1-2 v 0-3 score line.

O’Donovan Rossa were the better team at the start of the 2nd half hitting 3 points without reply in the opening 11 minutes. Aghada were missing whatever chances they were creating at this time, with Fleming (2), Pearse O’Neill (2) and substitute Josh O’Shea (1) all hitting wides. It was another substitute John Connolly, who played very well once introduced, that opened Aghada’s second half scoring with a point on 20 minutes. Before that, Aghada were grateful for a good save from ‘keeper Andrew O’Donoghue and they also had good performances in defence from Shane Wall, Billy Hennessy, and Ronnie Power. On 22 minutes Skibb created another goal chance, this time they blazed just over the bar for a point instead, and followed this up with another point a minute later to put them in control. Having been reduced to 14 men however, and with the Aghada substitutes coming to the fore, Aghada staged a fight back. First 17 year old Conor O’Driscoll, introduced with 7 minutes left for a hugely impressive senior football debut, collected a great pass from Kieran O’Connor and kicked a good point. Next the same player put Connolly through for his second. Then Josh O’Shea pointed superbly, before O’Keeffe fed O Driscoll, who kicked a super 2nd point of his own. 4 Points in 5 minutes had left just 2 between the sides, but the West Cork men steadied the ship after that, and kicked the final point of the game in injury time to seal the win.
