East Cork u21B Hurling Championship,
Dungourney took part in the U21 hurling championship for the first time in a number of years when they took on Aghada in Shanagarry on Friday night last.William Daly and his fellow selectors were hampered by the fact that some of the lads had work commitments and so had only 16 players to choose from but boy did they give it all for the cause!
The first half was an even enough affair with Aghada having the benefit of a strong breeze holding the advantage at the half time break by four points the main talking point of the first half being John O Neill having to go off after ten minutes with an ankle injury he was replaced by Conor Hayes.
The second half opened brightly with both sides exchanging points and Dungourney starting to close the gap on the scoreboard then came a defining moment when the referee advised the scoreboard operator that the score was wrong all of a sudden we went from two points to four points behind. Many in the crowd felt the ref had got it wrong but to their credit Dungourney knuckled down and battled on ,it was nip and tuck thereafter and deep into injury time we found ourselves three points down ,cometh the man though cometh the hour and up popped James McCarthy to cap a fine solo run with a goal to equalise. The heroic Conor Hayes was out by this time however a reaccurence of his knee injury meaning he had to be carried off after fifty five minutes but he had two points on the board before he departed.
So now we had extra time to look forward to ,ten minutes a side and only fourteen players surely not even this bunch of gladiators could survive this.
The extra time started with Aghada again having the wind advantage and after an exchange of points they finished the half on the up with a three point advantage ,dungourney fell another point behind just after the break but then came the comeback.A pointed free brought us back into it before Shane Hegarty hit a thunderbolt of a twenty one yard free to the back of the net and when James Mc put us ahead with a good point we were flying ,back came Aghada to equalise and there was another exchange of points before the ref blew the final whistle when fittingly the lads were on the attack again.
So an amazing night in Shanagarry and we live to fight another day and hopefully a full compliment of players but take nothing away from this team though from one to sixteen they were brilliant.
Final score Dungourney 2.18 Aghada 0.24.
