Lisgoold Update

20 April, 2009

THE Cork Football bandwagon rolls on as the U21’s squeezed past Dublin last Saturday into the final, along with the ladies footballers who secured their in place in yet another all-Ireland league final. There is a lot of consistent success from this code and lets all hope that the hurlers will pick up, especially after losing to the Waterford men last Sunday. With just 6 weeks from championship, lets hope all the cobwebs will be dusted off.

A hectic week for our club continued on from the 2nd team successful start to the hurling league with the first team hurlers in action and the second teams in football. Also, the U12’s produced a fabulous performance against St.Catherines as they finally got a win in the football league.

JHL Division 2

Lisgoold 3-11 (20)

Youghal 2-14 (20)

Our first team hurlers played out a cracking draw against Youghal in the Division 2 hurling league last Tuesday night. Some lovely hurling was played from start to finish especially with the lively John Cronin and sharp-shooter Moss Connell (who scored 1-4) in attack, and determined defending from Jerry O’Connell and the wily Kevin Shea ensured Lisgoold would never drift from their opponents. Kieran O’Shea emerged as the hero of the hour as he scored a late goal with a minute to go, to ensure a share of the spoils.

Manager Gerry Ryan was stated to have been “very satisfied” with the performance also said that “We played with great passion tonight, in very difficult circumstances as Youghal are a very hard team to beat especially at home I felt that some cobwebs have been dusted off, so we need to concentrate on getting a few wins together. However we must keep our feet on the ground as its only one game in what will be a long season.” Lets all hope this season would be a successful one for our hurlers.

JFL Division 3

Lisgoold 2-7 (13)

Aghada 0-12 (12)

Last Friday nighton a sun-kissed Rostellan pitch, our Second football team, finally secured a win in the football league with a narrow one point win over a very experienced Aghada side. Owen Heagrty showed to the first team management as an able contender for the Number 1 jersey, with a man of the match performance. It was a case of the usual suspects in defence, as strong performances from Noel, Brian and Paul ensured Lisgoold were rock solid throughout the hour.

Paul Stack was our scorer in chief as he scored 1-4 and also set-up Jerry O’Connell for the second goal. Patrick Connery and John Paul O’Brien were very athletic at midfield and also Denis O’Brien played very well in what was a great team performance. Lisgoold can be satisfied in what was a very profitable evening, in which some good attacking football was played. Manager Donal Woods stated “It was a good win, as we always have tough games against Aghada. This will be a confidence boost for us and with a few lads missing from tonight we have strong competition for places for championship in a few weeks time”. So the second team finally record a win, with two league games left, they will surely aim to win these in preparation for the championship clash against Russell Rovers first string in a few weeks time.

Lisgoold 4-4 (16)

St.Catherines 4-2 (14)

The club ended a very busy week on a high as the under 12’s secured a precious win against St.Catherines in what was a great game of football. Powered on by Jack Ryan and Ryan Hogan, Lisgoold played well from the very start. Liam O’Shea also played superbly as well as Conor Power who scored two cracking goals in the hour.

Cian Healy was also up to the mark as our boys played with a lot pride and passion, to capture their first two league points of the season. Selector Fergus Hodnett was stated to have said “Were delighted with this win, it will gives our lads a great boost for the season ahead. I’ve no doubt that with more commitment and effort in training; it will ensure we get more wins later on in the season”. So a very satisfying week for Lisgoold, and from this writers point of view lets hope we have a lot more this year.
