Lisgoold GAA Club News

25 June, 2012

Unfortunately for our young rebels they crashed out of the Munster championship to Tipp by one point. One hopes that the future of cork will be able to stem the tide and return to its former glory days. One must point that there was a clear evidence of this young talent as our own Liam O’Shea was representing Leamlara NS in the primary school games. Liam, a young very skilful hurler, was able to display (and possibly not for the last time in Cork colours) is well honed skills in a packed Páric Uí Chaoimh. Well Done Liam, you have done the parish proud.

As for our Junior Hurlers, they make their championship bow this Saturday night in Dungourney at 7:30pm. It will be a very tight game and judging by past matches and a few niggly injuries, St.Itas will be tipped to come through, however even though there has been a few setbacks, there is a lot of fight in these players and one those hope they can pull through. Our popular chairman Eoin O’Riordan had this to say, “I urge everyone to come out on Saturday night to support the lads, we need everyone behind this group of players, as clash with St.Itas, I wish them personally the very best of luck”

Lisgoold kept their status in division one for 2013 with an excellent away performance. Manager Tim Mulcahy experimented boldly with John Cronin in goals and brother Ciarán i lár na Parice. Brian O’Leary, Eoin O’Riordan and Denis O’Brien played well for our lads as they fought from 7 points down to end up winning by a solitary score. The excellent Liam Mulcahy’s (who gave a man of the match performance) hard graft was rewarded for the team as he set-up 1-5 with a very productive performance. Even a missed penalty from our forwards did not derail the comeback, as a wonderful goal which started from our goals by John Cronin (who had been moved out to wing-back) involved 8 passes before Liam set-up Brian for the equalising green flag. We looked heading for a share of the spoils until John Cronin managed to squeeze over the winner to consolidate our position. Manager Tim Mulcahy had this to say “I’m delighted we managed to save our league status for next season, while a disappointing performance in championship, we can take comfort that we are at Division 1 league for 2013. Some lovely football was played tonight, I’m proud of my players that they managed to pull this win off.”

Our hurlers recorded another two points in a very dour encounter against the men from Cloyne last Wednesday a few weeks ago. Rob Smart and Moss O’Connell were leading the way with Eoin O’Sullivan chipping in a few scores, John Cronin was simply majestic in defence again, and may have made a claim for first team selection. The game was a write-off however, as the speed of the hurling will have to improve if they want to get over the Gortroe men in a few weeks time.

A crucial victory for Lisgoold in Dungourney over the hosts saw the away side up their position to the upper end of the second division of the Hurling League . Noel Connery , dominant and powerful in his central defensive berth , led by example , and was well supported by the tireless and ebullient  Barry Ahern who lorded in his "lar na pairce" role. Maurice O'Connell , as usual , was accurate throughout and punished our visitors repeatedly from deal ball situations , whilst the youthful trio of Bryan O’Sullivan , Rob Smart and John Cronin kept the white flag raised in our favour , especially during an impressive second half that saw us run out victors by a deserved two point margin.

Our hurlers recorded another two points in another dour encounter against the men from Carrignavar in appalling conditions. Although the result was positive, the hurling wasn’t as Lisgoold can consider themselves lucky to get past an experienced Carrignavar side. Rob Smart, Pat O’Mahony, and Barry Ahern played well, but the more experienced players seemed to have a lack of cutting edge and yet again the slowness of the play was a huge concern which is needed to be at a higher gear for Junior A Championship, hopefully this will be sorted out come June 30th.

Fundraiser for new GAA dressing rooms - 3-ball golf scramble, East Cork Golf club Wed 23rd May (Report by Keith Mc Sweeney)

Huge crowd participated in Lisgoold's GAA inaugural golf classic in aid of the new dressing rooms on May 23rd last, in the beautiful surrounds of East Cork golf club.  After the inclement weather of previous days, May 23rd proved to be a wonderful day for a round of golf.  Thirty 3-man teams took part, with the course chock-a-block from mid-day on, with even a number of teams beginning at 9am.   All were agreed that the scramble format was a great success, providing an opportunity for people who don't play golf to partake in a realistic fashion, while not taking from the competitive nature of the event. The winning team was from East Cork golf club, scoring an impressive "2" on the par-3 18th to just about take the crown. It was that close!

A feature of the event was the huge support from a wide range of east Cork businesses who generously sponsored tee boxes. Many thanks to all of you. One couldn't finish this report without thanking East Cork golf club for the fantastic use of their facilities and for their wonderful dinner following the event for all the players.  The prize giving was well hosted by Woods bar and a very enjoyable night, to follow a fantastic day, was had by all.  The first of many such events!
