Castlemartyr GAA Notes 25/06/2012
Junior A Hurling Championship
Castlemartyr 0-12 Sarsfields 0-14

Castlemartyr entered the first round of the East Cork Junior A Hurling championship against Sarsfields in Cobh on Wed night but unfortunately were unable to get a victory, eventually loosing out by two points. We will have to go through the back door now if we are to progress and it will have to take a better performance if we are to do so.

Castlemartyr started brightly and were two points up after a Jimmy Smiddy 65 and a long distance free from Brian Smiddy. Sars then opened their account with a pointed free before Jimmy Smiddy restored out two point lead with a free after a foul on Barry Lawton. Sars then enjoyed a period of dominance with four unanswered points to go two ahead and it took some good defending by Rob O’Donovan and Barra O’Tuama in the full back line to prevent Sars from find the net. Evan O’Keeffe then pointed after a free from Jimmy Smiddy rebounder off the post and a great point from Barry Lawton from distance levelled the game. Sars pushed on again raised two white flags to restore their lead before Brian Lawton pointed from play to narrow the gap. Amother Sars point made the gap two again but Castlemartyr finished the half strongly, and three Jimmy Smiddy frees meant we were one ahead at half time and playing reasonably well.

While the first half ebbed and flowed, the second half was dominated by Sarsfields and it took until the 22nd minute of the half before Castlemartyr scored. By this point Sars had overturned our advantage and gone five points clear. Three Jimmy frees in the closing ten minutes kept the game alive right until the final whistle, but in the end it was not to be and we not have to see what the back door brings us in a couple of weeks. On the night Castlemartyr will be disappointed in only scoring three points form play over the hour and will have to improve on this statistic if we are to progress in the championship.
