Aghada GAA Club News

18 June, 2012

With five missing from the Fermoy game(Pearse inj, Brendan Crowley inj Dave Rice work, Billy Hennessy hols, CianFleming hols) what a win this was great hurling, commitment and heart was shownby all.

The lads have only six days to recover aswe head to Killavullen next Sat night for a round two game against last years PI F Champions Newmarket with a 8-ppm throw in lets hope our injures clear up.

Sun 17th June I H C 2nd Rd Aghada 0-16 Blackrock 0-12

Sparkling finish as Trevor sink Rockies

For The last ten minutes it was all Aghadaas trigger popped over free after free. But to do that ball had to be won andwhen the need was greatest our backline turned on the style and supplied theball that the forwards needed.

Missing five players from the last gamethis was always going to be a big hill to climb for Aghada but how they climbedit.

Aghada opened in a whirl wind outscoringthe city boys by five points to one after just seven minutes. Indeed the countcould have been more with Aghada playing a two man full forward line were wellon top, Trigger was through on goal twice after getting in side his marker buthe was denied first by the cross bar and then by the Rockies cul barra

Yet Aghada were to add only two more pointsfor the rest of the half one came on the 15th m from a 65 by trigger and we hadto wait another ten minutes before William Leahy added one. The Rockies were ontop now but it was their captain and free taker Brian Cashman that keep them intouch as he nailed six frees with some of them from distance.

By the 20th m it was level, Williamrestored the lead on 25 minutes but the City boys had the last say with twounanswered frees to leave the half time score Blackrock 0-8 Aghada 0-7

With in a minute of the restart Trigger levelledmatters from play as Aghada started to get the upper hand with the half backline of Melvin, Conor Rice, and Russell outstanding. It was still tit for tatas the lead interchanged a few times but crucially one could see the Aghadaside get on top especially on the free count and it was a battle of the freetakers.

By the 53rd minute the sides were level 12points a piece but then Aghada pushed for home and how they pushed and whenTrigger landed a free on the 63rd minute we were home and dry but still theRockies came in search of a goal and we were put to the pin of our collar butwe defended in waves and there found no way through

Team; Martin Day, Tom O’Neill, J PO’Connor, Kieran O’Connor (Capt), Ml Russell, Ger Melvin (0-1), Conor Rice, TimHartnett, Shane Wall, Eoin Healy, Tony Wall (0-2), Eoin Savage, John Connelly(0-1), Trevor O’Keeffe (0-11 frees 6, one 65) William Leahy (0-1), Sub RonanKennedy for Hartnett 47th m
