Lisgoold GAA Club News

A huge disappointment for the cork hurlers last Sunday as they slumped to a very heavy defeat to Kilkenny, the Camogie team saved our blushes by winning the Division 1 league title against Wexford, our congrats go to them. In Lisgoold, preparations are being stepped up as our hurlers gear for the JAHC. The second team were in action the past week with some interesting results.

Last week on a wet, horrible, Tuesday night – The old rear guard came out with a heroic, backs to the wall performance and pulled off a unbelievable win. A game which mirrored the recent champion’s league semi-final between Chelsea and Barcelona our lads played like caged tigers as they battled to a deserved two point win. Inspired by superb defending by Noel O’Riordan, Kevin Shea & Seamus McSweeney, our defence was fantastic for the hour, their performance especially gave us the platform to succeed. Mike Mulcahy had a very productive game by assisting with all our scores. The pivotal moment, in this contest came in the 13th Minute, when Dave Barry played a one-two with Mike Mulcahy to raise the green flag. Carrig raised their game and managed to leave the half time score at 1-2 to 0-3.

In the second half, it was a display of passion, determination and defiance that got us through. In a rare attack, (in this half) Denis O’Brien opened the scoring with a superb point. Liam Mulcahy and Patrick Connery also stepped it up as a swarm of attacks came upon us as they were camped in our half. However, with great concentration, fantastic organization and wonderful leadership we managed to wear down our opponents. The fact the wide count was 17 to 4 shows how hard the team worked to grind out a win, as they closed off the game excellently. Carrig eventually got the lead down to a point, but the evergreen Finbarr Brosnan managed to chip over a score in the last few minutes to seal a wonderful win.

Manger Barry Ahern had this to say “We (the club) were very down after last Friday’s championship loss to Castlemartyr but this was the tonic the club needed to lift our spirits. It was a fantastic display by our lads as we only had the bare 15 due to a couple of regulars with work commitments and exams coming up. I’m really proud of my players and I’m just delighted to put another two points on the board.”

Cobh 2-14 (20)

11th May 2012

Last Friday night - It was back to the drawing board again after another defeat this time to a very youthful Cobh team. Playing a very quick brand of hurling they dominated from start to finish on a very greasy Cobh pitch. Lisgoold had started brightly as Dave Barry, Andrew O’Donovan, Brendan Flynn and Peter Leahy got going from the first whistle. Peter Leahy was first to chip a point over after the Cobh lads hit three points, but they soon took over, and put up a few scores. Anthony McCarthy played well in goals and was the main reason that we only conceded one in the first half, Peter Leahy and Alan Conroy were the only ones who offered any resistance against the constant pressure as Cobh kept the pressure on. Noel O’Riordan, Damian Clifford, Jamie Hurley & Noel Connery, did their upmost to hold out the attacks that were coming through. It was 1-9 to 0-3 at half-time.

It was a formality in the second half as the game peeped out; both sides emptied the bench, as Cobh strength in depth showed. It was a tough defeat to take but they were plenty lessons to take on board. We can just hope that the second string can improve from this.
Team: Anthony McCarthy, Dave Barry, Noel O’Riordan, Damian Clifford, Kieran Barry, Jamie Hurley, Andrew O’Donovan, Noel Connery, Brendan Flynn, Finbarr Brosnan, Alan Conroy, Peter Leahy, Kieran O’Shea, Bill Whelan, Jamie Woods,
