Monday 7th May S.F.C. Castlehaven 0-12Aghada, 0-9

It’s the backdoor route for our seniorfootballers, after they went down to last year’s beaten finalists Castlehaven,in this year’s first round played in Newcestown, on Bank Holiday Monday. It wasa hard fought contest all through, but the ‘Haven just had that bit more intheir arsenal, when it mattered most going into the final stages. With lessthan 10 minutes to go the West Cork men led by2. Aghada missed two long range frees, and on both occasions, Castlehaven wonthe resulting kick out and broke up the field for 2 points to lead by 4 pointswith 5 minutes to play. Aghada were really chasing the game from here on andwhile Cian Fleming did pull one back from a placed ball, Aghada never reallylooked like hauling in the ‘Haven, who held on for a deserved victory.

Aghada played against the wind (although itwas more cross field than anything) in the 1st period and quickly fell behindwhen the Castlehaven corner forward superbly judged the strong wind to guideover the 1st score of the day. Aghada responded in splendid fashion. Playingtwo inside, in the form of Josh O’Shea and Cian Fleming, these two players andwould torment the Castlehaven defence all day. 1st Josh was fouled, but Aghadamissed the resulting free. A couple of minutes later however Fleming scored agreat opener for Aghada after good support play from O’Shea and Gerard Melvin.A minute later Josh fisted a good point and on 10 minutes Tony Wall drew a fouland Fleming pointed the free. In between Castlehaven pointed, to leave it 3points to 2 to Aghada. Castlehaven drew level on 15 minutes, and then 10minutes passed without a score for either side. Both sides were guilty of badmisses in this period, and Aghada ‘keeper Andrew O’Donoghue also made a finesave. Tony Wall earned another free, again converted by Fleming on 25 minutes, and a minute later impressive wing back Shane Wall was put through by JoshO’Shea for a fine score from play. Castlehaven replied on 27 minutes to finishthe scoring for the 1st half, as Aghada headed for the changing rooms leadingby 5 points to 4.

A super Fleming point from way out on theright hand side, gave Aghada a 2 point lead a minute after the restart. The‘Haven responded quickly however with 2 in two minutes to draw level , beforeanother fine score from Josh O’Shea briefly propelled Aghada to the frontagain. Significantly Aghada had to replace Eoin Healy at midfield where he hadbeing playing well, and Castlehaven were to dominate this sector to the end especiallyon the kick outs, winning a lot of breaking ball. 4 points for the West Corkmen in the next 10 minutes, with only a fantastic Fleming point from a sidelinein reply, gave Castlehaven a 2 point lead heading into the final ten, and fromhere they had the experience, knowhow and talent to see it out to the end andrightly earned the spoils.
