The reason this tournament is held every year is to honour the name of one of Sarsfields greatest heroes. A true legend in his time Mica was also a thorough gentleman and great family man. Born in 1914, in Riverstown  of Kilkenny parents Mica first came to prominence when he captained Cork  Minors in 1931 scoring a phenomenal 8-2 and found himself on the losing side to Waterford by a point. Renowned for ground hurling and striking in the air Mica had very strong wrists. He went on to win all the major honours of the game. 20 years later he had collected 3 S.H.C.  All Ireland Medals, 5 Munster S. H. Championship Medals, Five Railway Cup Medals, N.H. League Medal and a Cork County S. H. Championship with Sarsfields which he dearly cherished, it being Sarsfields first Senior County Championship Win.  I came to know Mica very well over the years having been very friendly with the family and one of the great true stories Mica recalled to me on an occasion was that of his great rivalry with Limerick goalkeeper of the time, the famed Paddy Scanlan. Mica was well know for charging the goal keeper in that era, if so, Paddy Scanlan was very adapt at protecting himself. He astonished me by telling me he kept one hurley in the goal with three 6" nails in the boss, he had warned everyone who charged the goalie to beware, or suffer the consequences. Mica went on to point out the scar's on his scalp after one such encounter. When the late Paddy Scanlan was buried Mica spent 3 days away at the funeral meeting all the "old former Greats", Davey Fitz, John Allen handbag stuff.

Back to the match. De la Salle fielded a very strong team as did Sarsfields. Half time score Sars 2-10 De la Salle 2-6. Michael Cussen again very much to the fore with a goal and four points from play. Kieran Murphy also chipping in with an early goal. De la Salle upped the pace big time in the second half and Sarsfields struggled to stay with them but a strong finish by Sarsfields helped them retain their lead at the end winning on a scoreline of 3-16 points to 4-11. A very enjoyable game overall.

The Sars played Buttevant in the J.H.L on Saturday evening,in a very disappointing game Sars ran out easy winners

on a scoreline of 2gls. 9pts to 6pts for the visitors.
