Glenville GAA News

After a five year absence Glenville second team entered the minefield which is Junior AFC level. Fr o Neills were our opponents, one of the strongest and most consistent teams in the championship over the last 10 years or so. Glenville making the bold step up to this level had a good league campaign to date but as we all know league and championship are completely different levels. O Neills were stronger off the blocks and moved the ball very well. Glenville in defence were very competitive and kept them at bay. A few silly mistakes led Fr o Neills in for a few score early on and they extended the lead to 0-4 to nil after the opening 15mins. Glenville struggled to keep with the pace but gradually settled and Johnny Dorgan ran through to be hauled down in front of goal, Brendan Maloney confidently dispatched the penalty high into the roof of the net. He followed with a point from play but o Neills replied instantaneously with a similar score. On the stroke of half time Brendan again pointed a free to leave the score level 1-2 to 0-5 after an eventful half. The opening sequence of the second half saw  o Neills find a new gear and they pressed home their advantage with a quickfire 1-2 inside the opening stage to put a bit of daylight between the sides. Glenville began to win a lot more ball around the middle and began to dominate the next 15minutes with Willie Connolly, sub Shane Field and Ger Cahill scoring to trim the lead to 1-8 to 1-6 with 10mins to go we looked like we were in contention to cause a major upset but things went pear shaped from a Glenville point of view with injuries to key players not helping our cause. Fr o Neills finished very strong with five unanswered points to deservedly take the spoils.Glenville can hold their head up as we were more than compeditive for 50mins but unfortunately ran out of steam at the end. Glenville must win the next round against last years beaten finalists Lisgoold who were narrowly defeated by Midleton. This game will take place on the weekend of April 13/14th. We hope to learn from the mistakes and be all the better the next day out. Final score Glenville 1-6 Fr o Neills 1-13.

Underage action was very thin on the ground with just one game taking place. Glenville 2nd U12 team taking on Cloyne away and lost out by a two point margin after putting up a solid display. Well done to all who played. This weekend Glenville have two games in the U12 grade with Glenville (1) travelling to Fr o Neills with Glenville (2) at home to Brian Dillons. Check locally for times.
