Lisgoold GAA Club News

26 March, 2012

Cork Senior’s yo-yo season continues as they recorded two fantastic wins against Mayo and Kilkenny respectively. In Lisgoold, our club lotto was won; we have another rebel within in the ranks!! Our Under 21’s bowed out of the football championship, and our junior footballers are preparing for battle with Midleton this Sunday.

Under-21 BFC Quarter-Final

Lisgoold 3-5 (14)
Dungourney 1-15 (18)
At Ballynoe
24th March 2012

Lisgoold under 21’s crashed out of the Under 21 Football Championship in very disappointing fashion in a wind-swept Ballynoe venue. Then majority of the match was a right battle and points were traded as well as the hits. It was a very satisfactory first-half performance from our young troops, especially with Cathal and Andrew doing well in the backs, Mikey keeping a good command of his goal area and with John Cronin and John McCarthy producing the goods we were in good stead. We went in for the half-time Jaffa 2-3 to 0-6 ahead.

However in the second half Dungourney took over, Shane Hegarty, Warren McCarthy and the outstanding James McCarthy (who contributed 0-9 over the hour) were leading the way for the sash. Midways through the half while Dungourney landed a soft goal and instant reply from Jamie Woods with a third goal seem to have rallied the troops but to no avail. The 'Duns' squeezed the life out of Lisgoold as they tacked on the scores. There was a case for a fourth goal for Lisgoold in the last few minutes which seemed to raise hope, but this was correctly disallowed as a square ball by referee Patrick Beasuang. Minutes later the final whistle sounded and we were out. Manager Owen Heagrty had this to say "Its disappointing to say the least, coming to the end it looked like we could pull it off, but we failed. We will just have to dust ourselves down and go back with the drawing board and back to work with the juniors. We will try and make up for this defeat, in the hurling championship in late July." Overall Dungourney were fitter, faster and more up to the age and played a better quicker and more direct style play of football with a very positive attitude to advance to a semi-final against Castlelyons and we wish the best of luck in that, while Lisgoold are left to ponder where it all went wrong.

Team: Mikey Savage, Rob Smart, Cathal Cashman, Andrew Donovan, Brian O’Connell, Conor Walsh, John Cashman, John Cronin, Alan Conroy, Jamie Woods, John McCarthy, Bw, Cian Scannell, Killian Kingston, Mark Kiniry.

Scorers: Jamie Woods 2-2, John McCarthy 1-1, John Cashman, John Cronin 0-1 each.

Subs: Brian O’Connell for Brendan Flynn.

Referee: Patrick Beausang (Midleton).

Junior Football League Div 1

Lisgoold 0-10 (10)
Kilshannig 2-13 (19)
At Lisgoold
25th March 2012

Lisgoold Juniors lost another 2 points in the Avondhu/Imokilly league. To be fair our lads tried their upmost, but Kilshannig proved much too strong over the hour. Manager Tim Mulcahy with a limited squad tried to experiment with a few positions which were working well for a while. Lisgoold Opened brightly with a point from John O'Shea, then quickly by Kevin O'Shea... But Kilshannig got in their stride and hit 1-4 without reply. Our midfield paring of Barry Ahern and Eoin O'Riordan were holding out and managed to set-up two more Scores for Ciarán Cronin which close the gap to a solitary score. However Kilshannig kicked on and took over for the reminder of the half and went in at the short whistle 7 points ahead. In the second half it was a formality as both sides made use of the squads, Kilshannig managed to raise a green flag and kept our lads at a distance, to be fair Lisgoold battled to end a had a late scoring spree with Ciarán and sub Jer O'Connell leading the way. Kevin O'Shea also spurned the chance of a green flag right at the finish, which would have put a bit of respectability on the score but it would only have proved a scant consolation. So Lisgoold lose yet another game, and with championship coming this Sunday, one would wonder is there much chance of us turning Midleton. With this latest performance it looks unlikely but our squad have 7 days to turn it around, we wish them the best of luck.
