Aghada GAA Club News

20 March, 2012

We bowed out of the U21 A football championship in an bizarre game last Friday night.

Aghada 0-12 Glenbower Rvs 3-11
Last years County B championships Glenbower Rovers produced the mother of all comebacks to defeat a gallant Aghada side. Played in the magnificent Killeagh complex on a wet night the football lifted our hearts ‘’well for the first half anyway’’.
Ronan Kennedy opened the scoring after a well worked move in the opening minute. Four minutes later the Rovers got a minor against the run of play, then on the ninth minute Conor O’Driscoll scored a sublime point, as Aghada dominated the middle of the park. A Russell point pushed Aghada two ahead on the ten minute mark. From the kick out in another break away Glenbower pointed. Michael Russell added his second as Aghada outshone the home side. As we entered the 3rd quarter Glenbower scored their third point.
From then till the third minute in the second half Aghada were in complete control and were playing out standing football. Moving the ball at pace and always finding the man with the overlap. In a five minute period Aghada landed four magnificent points three from Russell who lorded it and one from Ronan Kennedy to leave the half time score Aghada 0-8 Glenbower 0-3. And it could so easily have been more.

From the throw in it was more of the same three points in as many minutes and it should be going home time.
Then in a blink of an eye Glenbower goaled and Aghada were uncomfortable. Aghada now found it hard going and for the next five minutes it was stalemate then in on the 39th minute came the turning point of the game, as fullback Brian Condon bent down to pick the ball he got a push in the back, the ref failed to give a free and the ball ended up in the back of the Aghada net. Now only two points behind the home side pushed on adding 1-8 to a lonely point from Ronan Kennedy on the 50th minute.
