Castlemartyr GAA Notes 18/03/2011
Avon/Imokilly JHL Sec 2 Castlemartyr 0-15 Newtownshandrum 1-10
Castlemartyr made it two wins from two in the hurling league with a good win over Newtownshandrum at home on St. Patricks morning. The travelling team had to start with our two of their players who were still on route and this seemed to have little affect as they started the better with the opening point from play. Castlemartyr didn’t seem comfortable with their numerical advantage and it was only when Newtown were at their full compliment that Castlemartyr started to dominate. Our first score can from Brian O’Tuama and this was quickly followed by a free from jimmy Smiddy . Brian O’Tuama then scored his second point before Barry Lawton fired over two points to extend our lead. Newtown then pointed to reduce the deficit to 3 before Barra O’Tuama, who was making his first start after back from a long injury then got on the score sheet from his unfamiliar position of full forward. Barry Lawton then got his third of the day to leave us with a a 5 point lead at the break.
Like last week we again started the second half slowly with Newton scoring 3 unanswered points to show they were not going to leave without putting up a fight.   A Jimmy Smiddy free steadied the ship for Castlemartyr but again Newton dominated for a period with three points to tie the game going into the last quarter. Again Castlemartyr had to cope with an extra man as Newton had a player dismissed on a straight red card. Barry Lawton, who was proving a thorn in the side of Newton all morning then added a further two pints to his tally but again Newton responded to reduce the gap to a single point. Castlemartyr then had four points on the trot from Barry Lawton, Jimmy Smiddy, Mark Bowens and Seanie Hennessy to open a 5 point gap. This should have seen a comfortable last few minutes for the home team but a Newtown goal from a quick free insured a nervy finish for the home team but the two points were safe when the referee finally blew the final whistle. Best for Castlemartyr on the day were Barry Lawton who finished with a personal tally of six points and Rob O’Donovan who made a spectacular catch on the edge of his own square in the dying minutes.
