Castlemartyr GAA Notes 11/03/2012
Avondhu/Imokilly JHL Sec 2
Castlemartyr 1-14 Ballyhooly 0-13
In our 1st league outing of the year Castlemartyr made the journey to Ballyhooly on Sunday morning to take on the locals and were glad to come away with 2 points after a patch display. It was Ballyhooly who started the brighter and went into an early 2 point lead before a Jimmy Smiddy free reduced the deficit. Ballyhooly then had a pointed free of their own before Barry Lawton pointed for Castlemartyr.  Two more Jimmy frees put Castlemartyr into the lead which they didn’t give up for the remainder of the match. Barry Lawton then got his second of the game before Jimmy pointed, this time from play. Then, after winning a free out by the sideline, Jimmy sent the ball into the danger. The Ballyhooly goalkeeper failed to deal with it and it went all the way to the back of the net to give Castlemartyr a 6 point lead. However, the concession of soft frees meant Ballyhooly stayed in the game and at half time the score board read Castlemartyr 1-6, Ballyhooly 0-04.
Eddie Clifford pointed from out by the sideline for Castlemartyr after half time and another from play from Jimmy Smiddy put Castlemartyr 5 up. Bothe teams then exchanged pointed frees before Ballyhooly enjoyed a period of dominance scoring 3 unanswered points before Brian O’Tuama pointed to stop their momentum. Another set of pointed frees from both teams was followed by a fine long range point from captain Seanie Hennessy and another from play from Jimmy Smiddy kept our noses in front. Ballyhooly responded with two points to reduce the deficit to 3 but a point from substitute Mark Bowens sealed the victory. Best for Castlemartyr were jimmy Smiddy who always kept the score board ticking over for us and the full back line of Ollie Smiddy, Rob O’Donovan and Kevin O’Leary who gave nothing away in defence.
