Lisgoold GAA

06 April, 2009

As Denis Walsh made his managerial bow last Sunday, another one made his last Friday night. We would now like to wish Mike Woods the very best as he is the new member of the backroom staff of the Lisgoold Hurlers. Mike, a member of the victorious 1994 team will be well-respected amongst the panel, as they will bid to get over Bride Rovers in this years Championship. We wish Manager Gerry, Mike, Aidan and Logistics Manager Richie the very best this season.

Whilst in football, a raising star John Cashman made the club proud as he was involved in the Imokilly team that secured the shield in the Liam Lyne U-15 Tournament at the weekend. Showing great skill and class throughout the competition “The Stripes” secured the shield after a very long competition with a win over Duhallow. They should consider themselves unlucky not to win the Cup as they had drawn with the eventual winners of the tournament Muskerry, earlier in the group stages. Well done John.

Lisgoold 2-9 (15)

Russell Rovers 1-8 (11)

Our Minors kicked off their league campaign in hurling with a fantastic away win in Shanagarry, last Thursday night. Playing with a great determination and skill over the hour, our minors produced a solid display to record a four point triumph over Russell Rovers. Some great defending from Conor Walsh and Sean Noel led the foundations for this win, whilst a great attacking display led by Rob Smart and Alan Conroy made sure that any chances created were taken.

Manager Dermot McCarthy was stated to have been “very satisfied” with the performance also said that “We played with great passion tonight, in very difficult circumstances as Russell Rovers are a very hard team to beat especially at home. However we must keep our feet on the ground as its only one game in what will be a long season”. Lets all hope this season would be a successful one for our minors. Well done lads.

JFL Division 2 April 1st 2009

Lisgoold 3-11 (20)

St.Catherines 0-4 (4)

As the Irish were securing another point in Italy on their road to qualification for the world cup in South Africa, Lisgoold secured another two points on their way to qualification for Division 1. Played under the beaming lights of Ballynoe, Lisgoold recorded a relatively easy triumph over what can be said a disorganised St.Catherines side.

Charlie McCarthy and Brian O’Leary were comfortable throughout in defence, while Moss, Kevin O’Shea and Ciarán (who scored 1-4 from play) showed great gust in attack, and took their chances when given. Midfield pairing Alan (who scored a cracking goal) and Eoin were industrious as usual and Lisgoold can be satisfied in what was a very profitable evening, in which some good attacking football was played. Manager Donal Woods stated “It was good win, great to see young players like Killian and Jamie coming through the ranks. This win sets us up nicely for promotion to Division 1”. It does, as we sit top of the table, and with three games to go, two wins from them three games will give us Division 1 status next year.

U16 CFL March 30th 2009

Lisgoold 2-8 (14)

Bride Rovers 3-5 (14)

Last Monday night, our under 16 team earned a fantastic point in Rathcormac as they played out a cracking draw. With Mikey Savage playing like man possessed at full back, the mobile John Cashman at centre forward (scored 1-6), and “Super Mac” John McCarthy at midfield, Lisgoold took the game to Bride Rovers from the very first whistle.

The match was played at a frantic pace, as scores were quickly taken with John Cashman opening the scoring, some great link-up play from Cathal to Cian ensured Lisgoold had plenty of supply ball to the forwards and they went into for the half time Jaffa 1-4 to 0-3 ahead.

The second half saw the Rovers awaking from their slumber as 2 cracking goals in a few minutes, pushed them ahead. However a very determined Lisgoold refused to yield and roared back in front with some splendid points from John Cashman and Kyle Devine. The boys from Rathcormac looked to have stolen victory with a goal with a few minutes left, however young Mark Kinery was the hero of the hour, as he scored the equalising goal with only a minute remaining to ensure a share of the spoils. So a solid start for our boys, lets hope they can build from here.
