Cloyne 3-8 (17)
At Cloyne
12th February 2012

Our second string kicked off the 2012 campaign with a decent performance against Cloyne’s second string. Under the new management of Barry Ahern, who due to a limited selection available to him opted for a blend of youth and experience. Due to unpredictable weather conditions lately the match was in a very heavy bog-like pitch, but unlike the rugby match in Paris, Midleton referee Patrick Beausang proceeded to continue with the fixture. Lisgoold started brightly with some great power play by the youthful duo of Bill Whelan and Mikey Savage. John O’Shea got the first score of the year, which was set up nicely by Dave Barry and Moss Mulcahy. Cloyne came back into contention with a few scores, Lisgoold responded with three points from Moss, before Damian Clifford (who we like to welcome back to the club) raised the green flag with a poacher’s goal. Cloyne raised their game again and responded well, but good defending from Emmet Cussen, Kieran Barry and Paul O’Brien ensured we went in at half-time 1-5 to 0-5 ahead.

The second half was a bit of a downer for Lisgoold as Cloyne took over proceedings, the scored 1-2 in quick succession to regain the lead; it was a bit of a dog-fight as energy from both sides was being drained from the heavy conditions. Paudie Ryan and Paul Stack came on and the changes seemed to have worked a treat as Kieran O’Shea chipped over a free, and with seven minutes to go we were only four points behind. (2-7 to 1-6) However, three minutes from the end Cloyne stole in for a third goal and the game was won. It was a bit unfair on our lads, as they didn’t deserve to lose by eight points but when you consider that our forwards hit a staggering twelve wides in the match, Cloyne deserved their win. Overall it was a decent performance but much more will be expected, but when more players will be available in the coming weeks, results (hopefully) will improve. Manager Barry Ahern had this to say “It’s very satisfactory considering it’s the first game of the year and while the result is a bit disappointing, it must be noted it was hard to play any football in such a heavy pitch. However, the performances of Bill Whelan, Mikey Savage and Kieran Barry were real positives and we just have to build from there”.

Everyone in the club would like to offer their congratulations to Mike and Esther O’Shea on their new arrival to their family - Padraig James O’Shea was born last Friday night. Another addition to the O’Shea clan, who hopefully will have the blue and gold colours on in the years to come.
