Latest News from St Itas GAA Club
On Monday the 26th Dec, St Stephens day St Itas held their annual Christmas Puc Fada competition from Gortroe village to Redbarn. The prize for this event was the Willie Sloane Memorial Cup. This 2 mile course is fairly straightforward in that there are no hills and the road is relativity straight.  With good shelter on either side from the wind and no rain even though it threatened to with the cloudy overcast morning it was it was perfect weather for the Puc Fada.

There was a good turn out this year with everyone on good form.  With all the teams lined up and ready to go the first group of two teams with three in each team crossed the start line at 10 past eleven. They were followed by all the other teams till the last team crossed the start line.  By one o clock all teams had crossed the finish line with a clear result on a score of 41 the O Brien team were declared this years winners with Darragh, Ciarian and Padraig putting in a record breaking performance to win this year. Chairman Sean Harnedy was on hand to present the winning team with their prizes.

The main news from the AGM was as follows. It was decided that St Itas would take part in the Avondhu/Imokilly League Division 1 for 2012 having been promoted from Division 2 last year. The selectors for the coming year are Sean Harnedy and Shane Supple along with the coach for the coming year.  We must say thanks to Oliver Loughlin and Art Supple both who have stepped down after giving several years as selectors and bringing the team this far.

At this point I think it only fair that we acknowledge all the help and support we got throughout the year from the East Cork Board and different clubs who helped us when the occasion’s arose in changing match fixtures, venues etc, we were not the only club facing the problems of player numbers being short and this year and sadly nearly every club was affected by emigration and or players having to stop playing because of work or school. St Itas would like to thank all the players, our coach, our selectors and club members, our sponsors and hard working committee but most of all St Itas wish to thank everyone who supported our club throughout the year at our matches, fundraisers and different club events.
