Minor League Victory for Erin's Own

31 March, 2009

Erins Own 2-20 Carrigaline 3-10

Erins Own had a comfortable win over Carrigaline in their opening game of the Minor Hurling League on 30th March. David Smiddy opened the scoring in the 4th minute with a fine point and this was followed soon after by a point from Mark Collins. Niall Scanlon and Mark Collins were well on top in midfield and this provided a plentiful supply of ball to our forwards. David Smiddy set up Cian O Callaghan for a peach of a goal in the 10th minute to put the Erins Own boys 1-04 to 0-1 in front.

Mark Collins was outstanding all through the game scoring 7 points in the the 1st half 4 from frees and 3 points from play. Carrigaline reduced the deficit with a good goal in the 22nd minute and were only four points in arrears at the break on a scoreline of 1-11 to 2-04 after scoring a fortuitous goal in the 28th minute when a ball rebounded from the crossbar and the Carrigaline full forward reacted quickest to tap the ball home.

Carrigaline closed the gap to 1 point within 10 minutes of the restart but Erins Owns then upped the pace of the game and scored 5 unanswered points from Mark Collins, Andrew Power and Diarmuid Ring to regain control. Kieran Moynihan scored Erins Own’s 2nd goal to put the result beyond doubt and Carrigaline got a consolation goal minutes from the end of the game. It was fitting that Mark Collins got the final score of the game to cap a marvellous performance and bring his tally for the night to 13 points.
