HISTORIC TRIUMPH FOR
WATERGRASSHILL IN JUNIOR DECIDER
In a year when many clubs failed to deliver in various grades, Watergrasshill proved to be top dogs on the domestic scene, capturing their first county junior hurling title. An impressive 3-8 to 0-10 victory over Charleville at Castletownroche capped a wonderful year for the Red jersey brigade and the triumph finally laid to rest the memories of many barren years.
On the way to the final the team defeated Delany’s in Riverstown and then performed magnificently to put one over Aghabullogue in a rip-roaring semi-final at Blackrock. Level with nine minutes left the match was there for the taking. Nevertheless, there was a gradual improvement in the Hill’s play and when Harry Kennedy fired in the lead goal it was enough to ensure victory on the narrow scoreline of 3-5 to 1-10.
Moreover, Kennedy’s overall contribution – he finished with a hat trick of goals – was immense and he was the instigator of the attack along with county minor John Higgins, who registered three of the points. The final was also fiercely contested and to their credit Charleville never threw in the towel. They clocked up some decent points, but the goals came at the right time for the Hill and they had a distinct advantage in the end.
