The first team played Cobh in the second round of the East Cork Junior 'A' Football Ch'ship last Sunday and emerged with a creditworthy victory on a scoreline of 1-13 to 1-08. This was a vast improvement on the last outing with the whole team stepping up to the required mark this time out. We played our natural high tempo brand of football for most parts which at times the opposition just couldn't contain. Cobh did punish us twice when we were caught on the ball and one of those times resulted in a goal but all in all the lads can be pleased with the performance. The forwards played much better with intelligent ball coming in from midfield and the half back line. Adrian Donovan in particular was in great form putting over a fantastic score from way out on the right midway through the first half. In this game the forwards were recycling the ball too instead of running into blind alleys. Damian Daly in his much more favoured half forward spot put the finishes to some excellent moves during the game. Stephen O'Brien was looking for the simple option and had his best game of the season. Kevin O'Brien too was carrying the ball to great effect and bringing the full forward line much more into the game with some fine service. There was some wayward finishing, which must be eliminated, but all in all a much improved display from the forwards. The midfield was fairly solid if not spectacular and the backs were in commanding form again ably led by Brian Sigerson and Denis Hurley, who had a fine game. Leading at half-time 9pts to 1-03 the game was still up for grabs but a superbly taken goal by Adrian O'Donovan after a great move within two minutes of the restart put us firmly in the driving seat and in a lead which we never looked like relinquishing. Cobh did put it up to us for a period in the second half as expected but the defence withstood their attacks comfortably. We look forward now to a meeting with Carrigtwohill in the next round in two weeks time.
