Glenville GAA news

Last week was a very very busy week with Glenville teams involved in four semi finals, unfortunately the Juniors, Minors and U16s were all defeated while the U15 side are the only team standing for the year.

Glenville U15 Footballers produced a very solid performance in disposing of the Donoughmore challenge in Donoughmore on Sunday last in trying conditions. Donoughmore had the advantage of the slight breeze in the first and had us in trouble with their aggressive play.

Glenville began to assert themselves after the shaky opening and began to move the ball a lot better. Dilan o Donovan opened our account with a good score but the highlight of the game was the outstanding free taking from distance from Colm Fenton who kicked some magnificent frees from distance.

Josh Cooke also kicked three good scores . The game hung in the balance well into the second half when Donoughmore forced parity, after we lead 0-5 to 0-1. A goal after a defensive mistake make a right fight of things and when they tied the scores with 10 minutes to go it was anyones game but a late scoring spree and a poachers goal form Daniel Fitzgerald gave Glenville a deserved but flattering win.

Glenville 1-11 Donoughmore 1-4.
Team. E Hammond, D Murphy, A Ricken, C Prendergast, A Collins, D o Farrell, D Hegarty, C Fenton, D o Donovan, J Cooke, M Goggin, K Cronin, C Curtin, A Murphy D Fitzgerald. Subs D McCarthy, C o Callaghan, T Dinan, K Spriggs.

Minors bow out at Semi Final to strong ilen side.
Travelling to face a very strong ilen Rovers side, the task was made so much tougher with the injury situation but even if we had our full complement this ilen Rovers side are a serious outfit and played some scintillating football that we had no answer to.

Ilen were ahead 0-4 to 0-1 after 15 minutes when the goals fest started keeping the large crowd entertained. In the 15 minutes before the break six goals were scored. Ilen hit four while Glenvilles Aidan Foley who played very well scored our two. Trailing 4-6 to 2-5 at half time we still had a chance but ilen upped the tempo after the break and kicked some super scores. Glenville tried hard but the margin was too great to overcome.

Ilen Rovers move onto the County Final where they face Kanturk and will be a major surprise if they don’t win this one. Glenville on the other hand performed well all year and played seven championship games.

Unfortunately a 4-16 to 2-6 defeat is a disapointing ending to the season but with 13 of the starting 15 underage again next year they is no reason why this team cant make an impression in 2012. Well done to all who provided great entertainment throughout the year.
Glenville Team . C Fenton, N Griffin, E Lynch, J Mc Carthy,  S o Riordan, M Kennedy, D o Farrell, K o Neill,  B Fenton, B Halbert, S o Regan, S Field, A Foley, A Ricken. Sub used D Cronin.

U16 Football league semi final

A game that should be done and dusted at half time in which Glenville were not flattered by the 3-4 to 0-4 interval lead. Played in windy Fouhy Park on Wednesday night, In fact the margin should have been much greater but for a number of top class  saves from the Aghinagh goalkeeper.

Glenville dominance was rubberstamped by two well taken goals from Adam Murphy and another from Josh Cooke. Glenville were well in control and no one could really for see the dramatic change that accured  later in the game. Some sloppy defending left in Aghinagh for a soft goal early in the second but Shane o Riordan instantly carved an opening and scored high to the roof of the net to cancel that score.

A resurgent Aghinagh kept plugging away and were rewarded with two goals in 30 seconds to push them right back in the game. At this late satge it was all Aghinagh and Glenville conceded three late points to loose out by the minimum.

Glenville 4-6 Aghinagh 4-7
Team E Hammond, A Ricken, C Fenton, K Cronin, D Donovan, N Griffin, D Hammond, K o Neill, D o Callaghan, J Cooke, S o Riordan, PJ Dennehy, D o Flynn, A Murphy, G Carmody.

Junior B Football semi final
This was our fourth semi final in four days this time the Junior Footballers travelled to Castlelyons to play the home side in the semi final of the JBFC.. This was always going to be a difficult game for us with so many promoted to the higher grade and the fact that Castlelyons are a very good side and most definitely would compete strongly at a higher level of football. Glenville had to play the final 40minutes with 14 men the task was near impossible.

Still Glenville even well beaten on the night can hold their heads up as they gave everything.  Paddy o Leary, Mike Kennedy Paud o Neill , Noel Cahill Tadhg Barry Murphy and sub Aidan Foley were in good form.  The team had a good run playing Midleton, Lisgoold and St Catherines but this particular hurdle was a bridge too far.

Castlelyons winning 2-1 to 0-2. Castlelyons play Youghal in the Final .
Glenville Team. B Cosgrove, P o Leary, P o Neill, M Kennedy,  Tadhg Barry Murphy, N Cahill, M Keane, C Whelan, G Hogan, D Kearney, R Cahill, J Colloty, S Field, JJ Kearney, TJ Forde. Subs used B Halbert, A Foley, J Mc Carthy, B Fenton.
