BRIDE ROVERS GAA NOTES.

Senior Lose Out Narrowly.

It was heartbreak at Pairc Ui Chaoimh last Sunday when we lost to CIT in the Co SHC. In our sixth match of the campaign we lost by a margin of just three points 2 10 to I 16.

We struck eight wides while the students had nine over the hour. We got a first minute goal and led by two points entering the last quarter. Just like the Erins Own game we failed to get enough scores towards the end.

CIT got six points to our one in the last fifteen and our forwards got no score during the last eighteen minutes of the game. The game never reached any great standard as two evenly matched teams hurled with plenty endeavour. Playing against the wind in the first half we went in on level terms, 1 8 apiece and looked to be in a good position.

A win still looked on until the late scoring burst for CIT which we simply could not match. The bottom line is that we got only five points from play during the game and at Senior Level you need much more than that.

A goal from Michael Collins from the throw in gave us the perfect start. The score had only gone up on the board when the students had a green flag at the other end and our brilliant start was gone. With ten minutes gone we were 1 3 to 1 0 in arrears. Barry Johnson then had three points in a row -one from a 65, one from a free when David Burke was fouled and one from play to put us level at 1 3 each.

Points from Daniel Dooley and Sean Ryan were answered with similar scores by CIT. Padraig Murphy was fouled and Barry put us ahead but the students came back to level again. We finished the half strongly with our defensive lines clearing well.

Points from Barry and David Burke edged us two ahead as the thirty minutes elapsed. CIT had two injury time scores to level it up 1 8 each at the break. With Brian Murphy keeping tabs on Aidan Walsh we had every reason to be confident for the second half. Though CIT had the first point we quickly went ahead.

The sliotar hit the upright from a Barry Johnson free but Michael Collins was on hand for his second goal to give us a two point lead. CIT got one back but when Brian was fouled Barry restored our two point advantage 2 9 to 1 10.

Unfortunately we didn’t score again until a goal attempt from a free by Dinny Fitzgerald flew over the bar late on when CIT were gone four ahead. In the last few minutes we tried for an equalizing goal but failed. So near and yet so far again as we yearned for a crack at Newtown in the semi final but our scoring rate left us down.

In the first game 18 and 17 points were scored by Ballymartle and Midleton and you need scores like that to win big games. No one was more disappointed than each and every player - we played 23 at Senior level this year, panel. In fairness we must give them great credit for the manner in which they turned the season around after two defeats in June.

Playing six championship games in any grade in any one season is amazing and yet we are out of the championship as CIT now play Newtown while Midleton await either Cloyne or Carrigtwohill in the second semi.
