East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship
Castlemartyr 0-04 Dungourney 3-15

Castlemartyr endured their first defeat in the East Cork championship for over two years and it was a very comprehensive one at the hands of Dungourney last Saturday night. This was a repeat of last years final but with a completely different result. Dungourney out played Castlemartyr in all areas of the field and The Reds have some very hard work ahead of them if they are to contend in East Cork this year. Castlemartyr failed to score for the final 40 minutes of the game and this is a statistic which will be very worrying for the management team.

From the early stages Dungourney looked dangerous, hitting the post after only a minute after one of their forwards completely broke through the Castlemartyr back line. For the next 15 minutes or so Castlemartyr traded points with Dungourney. Jimmy Smiddy scored 3 points, two from frees and one from play. Eddie Smiddy also raised a white flag but remarkably this was to be our last score of the contest as Dungourney took over the game from here until the end. Just before the half time whistle they scored their first goal of the night after Shane Casey finished to the corner after getting free inside the 21. At half time the score line read 1-9 to 0-04.

The second half proved no better for Castlemartyr as we continued to struggle up front. With Dungourney played the smarter hurling they added a further 2-6 without reply.

Castlemartyr now go on to play Killeagh in the back door and a major improvement will be needed if we hope to progress to Round 3.
