Wed 8th June I H L Div 2 Aghada 4-11 Mallow 2-13

Aghada had a welcome win in this Intermediate hurling league game against Mallow.

Fielding only ten of the starting fifteen that lined out against Ballygarvan, it was going to be a hard task to move up the table.

Aghada opted to play with the wind and it helped them to settle. Two minors from Tony Wall had the home side in front after 4 minutes. For the next few minutes It was stalemate as both sets of backs were on top, then on the 11th Minute Mallow opened their account from a placed ball. They levelled a minute later, before Wall replied with two more points one from a placed ball, the Aghada forwards were now on top especially William Leahy and Owen Savage. On the 19th m Mick Glavin operating at full forward outsmarted the full back and drove for goal. Sub Trevor O’Keeffe who had replaced Savage (inj.) was straight into the fray and landed a lovely point from play. Mallow kept in touch from places balls indeed they must have scored from ten frees or 65’s over the hour. Trevor added a long range free and then the Mallow cul barra dropped a long shot from trigger and it rolled over the line to see Aghada ahead by 2-6 to 4 points as the short whistle approached. Then Mallow got a long range goal to leave only five points between the sides. On Resumption Tony Wall opened with a minor, but with the wind behind them Mallow came at Aghada and by the 41st m had landed six points, with Wall getting one back in between that onslaught.

Aghada were now under the cosh having lost Billy Hennessy who had to go to work Mallow looked dangerous as Aghada were stretched to the limit. Martin Day made some great stops, while Kieran O’Connor put the shackles on Mallows best forward with some great hooks and stops. In a master move Trigger went to mid field and Aidan O’Connell to the edge of the square, he was no sooner settled in when he scored one of the best executed goals seen for a long time. Aghada now got a grip and stemmed the flow. Minutes later O’Connell won a great ball and laid off a better one, which Wall finished to the net. Tony added two more frees before Glavin had Aghada’s last score when again O’Connell and laid off a great ball for Galvin to point.

Mallow never gave up, landing a few 65’s and then got an old fashioned goal from a high ball dropped into the square from a 65 but it was too little to late.

Team Martin Day, Kieran O’Connor, J P O’Connor, Billy Hennessey, Conor Rice, Michael Russell, Tom O’Neill, Ian Fleming, Tim Hartnett, Aidan O’Connell (1-0), Aidan Cotter, Owen Savage, William Leahy, Michael Galvin (1-1), Tony Wall (1-8 frees 0-4) Subs Trevor O’Keeffe (1-3 frees 0-2) for Savage (inj.) 15th m. Liam Morressy for Hennessey 39th m.

That win came with a big price as Michael Russell received a broken finger and will be unable to line out on Friday night against the Rockies. Ger Melvin is also unable to play to big men missing. That game is timed for 7-30 in Midleton best of luck lads.

Well done to the Cork U14 ladies who beat Dublin 5- 12 to 3 -5 in the All Ireland final congrats to Hannah Looney and Cassie Tynan who become the latest Aghada people to add All Ireland Medals to their name.
