East Cork U8 Hurling Blitz – Saturday 30th May

On Saturday last Castlemartyr GAA club hosted the East Cork U8 Go Game Hurling Blitz in which 16 clubs took part. Youghal travelled with a panel of 20 players all of which played a major part in their sucess on the day.

The first match was a cracker and set the tone for the following games. Carraig na bhFear put up a strong challenge which saw them leading at halftime despite the skills shown from Conor Savage and Nathan Daly. Youghal came out fighting hard in the second half and with a strong wind in their favour them picked off some great scores.

Declan Daly and Fionn Gardiner gave a mighty performance and with a the backline clearing everything that came their way, Youghal's U8's secured their first win.

The second challenge came from a very strong Castlelyons team but the skill and speed displayed by Youghal proved too much for Castlelyons on the day. Some great scores by Micheal Walsh and Culan Geary helped seal the victory for Youghal. The final match was against Ballinacurra and this proved to be the best game of the day. Ballinacurra took an early lead and kept increasing their lead with some superb scores.

Youghal fought back well before halftime with some great skill shown by Conor Sheridan and Wisdom Erhimwionsobo. The Youghal backline were under immense pressure but held their defence well.

The second half went Youghal’s way with Oisin Hill and David Murphy proving too strong at centre field for Ballinacurra. The Youghal boys secured a last minute score to manage a well deserved draw for their final match of the day.

Well done to all involved for a very successful and skillful day of hurling and thanks to Castlemartyr G.A.A. for hosting the blitz.

Training for Under 8’s (Born 2003) is on Saturday’s at 10.30 a.m. and Tuesdays between 6-7pm. For further details please contact Alan Geary or Aine Martin at Youghal G.A.A.

Eochaill 1-9 Erins Own 2-15

Thursday Youghal minor hurlers came up short against Erins Own in their second league match on Thursday evening in resplendent Copperalley. Youghal went behind to an early goal but recovered well with good points from Ross Desmond and Josh Whelan.

Ronan O’ Sullivan was a threat throughout the half at corner forward and Youghal were well in touch a half-time, trailing by three points. A goal early by Ronan O’ Sullivan in the second half brought Youghal within a, but Erins own responded with a quick goal and a series of points to increase their lead.

Youghal, with Andrew Curtin outstanding at centre forward, tried hard but couldn’t get the needed goal.

Best for Youghal were Andrew Curtin, Mark Flaherty, Michael O’Neill, Ross Desmond and Ronan O’ Sullivan. This was the last game until the completion of Junior and Leaving Cert exams so non exam players should use the next two months to develop their ballwork and fitness levels.
