Sat 7th May S.F.C. Aghada 0-11 Valley Rovers 0-10

Aghada made short work of their league form when they saw off Valley Rovers in the opening round of the evening echo senior football championship.

Fielding three players playing in their 1st senior championship it was always going to be a big ask.

Aghada broke from the traps and should have had a goal when Cian Fleming was one and one with the goalie only for the Valleys man to get a touch and send it out for a fifty.

Valleys with the elements behind them started to come at Aghada but found stiff resistance for the backline especially Stephen Cashman. Yet they registered two minors before Cian answered with a point from a placed ball on the ninth minute. Our next score came on the 15th minute from Pearse but Valleys had two in between. The weather had deteriorated by now with the result there was a lot of slipping and loose ball around the place. Valleys added two more points to a free from Fleming to go six points to three ahead as the half closed. A late burst from Aghada saw Fleming hit two long range frees to go in at the brake an unlikely point down. On resumption Fleming slipped his man and levelled the game from the throw in. Aghada were now on the ascendency and should have had a goal minutes later. Tom O’Neill and Eoin Healy had a grip in the middle of the park and Aghada used it to go ahead for the 1st time on the 37th m from a free by Fleming. For the next seven minutes it was stale mate which was broken by the boot of Fleming again from a placed ball and Aghada were two clear.

Valleys hit back with three minors on the trot to lead again as Aghada had to soak the pressure and found themselves a point behind with nine minutes left on the clock.

With ours backs to the wall we found that extra gear as Russell levelled on the 56th m, Pearse gave us the lead two minutes later and Fleming hit the insurance a minute later, and as it turned out we needed it.

A great display indeed as Aghada showed their old never say die attitude. Aidan O’Connell, Stephen Cashman and Owen Savage stepped up to the plate and played like veterans. It was a team effort with all the lines showing well Colm Power covered might ground and had it all given when John Connelly was introduced. Kieran was outstanding at the heart of the defence indeed no one could be faulted on a wet and miserable night for football. The league points also went on this game.
