Castlemartyr GAA Notes

East Cork Junior A Football Championship

Castlemartyr 0-13

Bride Rovers 1-6

A fantastic win for Castlemartyr in the 3 round of the football championship played in Lisgoold last Sunday night.

Castlemartyr lead for almost the entire match but this is not to say it was an easy victory as the lads had to show great character to withstand a Bride Rovers comeback in the second half.

Castlemartyr had to start without the big presence of Rob O’Donovan at full back after he failed to recover from a hamstring injury. Brian Smiddy moved from the corner to full back and had a solid game throughout.

Castlemartyr were first to score through with Maurice Hodnett raising a white flag after a good pass from Donacha O’Tuama. Bride Rovers responded with 2 points of their own to take the lead before a neat Barra O’Tuama point squared the game again.

Bride Rovers then had a pointed free but it was to be their last score of the half as Castlemartyr upped a gear and dominated the game until the half time whistle. First Maurice slotted over a free after a foul on Jimmy Smiddy.

Mark Bowens found the range after being set up by Donacha O’Tuama and Maurice again pointed another free after Damien McAulliffe was fouled. Brian Lawton then had a brace of points, one from a free and another fantastic individual effort.

This gave Castlemartyr a 4 point cushion at half time with the score board reading 7 points to 3. Bride Rovers started well in the second half and had a point on the board early to reduce the defecit. Jimmy Smiddy then slotted over a point after a Brian Lawton free came back off the post.

Brian Rovers again pointed to keep in touch but the accurate Jimmy Smiddy again raised another white flag for the Reds. Maurice Hodnett extended the Castlemartyr lead with another point as we now had a 4 point advantage half way through the second half.

Michael john Cremin was then called upon to make a smart save to keep our lead after a Bride Rovers attacker cut in from the wing to have a shot for goal. James Barry was the introduced as he was to make a huge difference to the Castlemartyr attack for the rest of the match.

The game was to have some drama however as Bride Rovers were awarded a penalty after one of their attackers was pushed just as he was about to shoot for goal and they converted this spot kick to only leave the minimum between the sides.

It was at this point Castlemartyr showed their character as they did not let Bride Rovers score again. Three unanswered points gave Castlemartyr victory by four. Jimmy Smiddy pointed again after some good work by James Barry and James got a well deserved point himself after that. Mark Bowens then got the insurance point and Castlemartyr now go on the meet Carraig na bhFear in the quarter final.
