2017 Cork Senior Hurling Champions

2017 Cork County Senior Hurling Championship Round 1
SHC Imokilly 2-26 Vs Bishopstown 0-12 06/05/2017 Riverstown 6.45

On Saturday evening last Imokilly took on Bishopstown in front of a large crowed in the opening round of the Cork Senior Hurling Championship in a well turned out Riverstown. With the weather conditions favourable for Hurling at 6.45 ref Nathan Wall from Carrigaline threw in the ball. For the first 20 minutes it was a very even contest with both sides scoring point for point and both sides hitting the same number of wides, Paudie O'Sullivan got the first score of the game and Seamus Harnedy & Will Leahey out on the 45 were causing the Bishopstown defence some problems, however by
the 20th minute Imokilly started to open a gap and managed to hold this until half time which saw both sides go in at the break ahead on a score of Imokilly 0-11 to Bishopstown 0-7

The second half started with Bishopstown adding the first point of the half to the board but that was to be as close as they would get for the remainder of the game. Imokilly pushed on and started adding points to the board. The defence also tightened up and gave away less free's in the second half and Imokilly started to dominate around the  middle of the field. The introduction of Billy Dunne at full forward halfway through the second half did nothing to help the Bishopstown cause as he scored 4 points from play after coming on. Imokilly emptied the bench in the last quarter and the game as a contest was pretty much over by then, Imokilly were well on top all over the field.and their goals in the second half pretty much killed off Bishopstown. By the final whistle with 3 minutes injury time added Imokilly finished the game strong winners on a scoreline of Imokilly 2-26 to Bishopstowns 0-15.

Well done to both teams for a very sporting game with only 1 yellow card given out on the night and the ref did a good job allowing the game to flow. Imokilly go on to faceThe winners of U.C.C in the next round of the competition

2017 Cork Senior Hurling Championship Round 2
This week Imokilly faced UCC in the second round of the Championship and again this was in Riverstown on Sun 4th June.

Imokilly and UCC had good wins in the first round with Imokilly seeing of Bishopstown while UCC beat Douglas to progree to this 2nd round meeting. With scores high from the  frist round games it was expected this would be a high scoring, close game and it was for the most part.

With the pitch in amazing condition and some light rain overhead the ref Colm Lyons threw  in the ball to strat the game and within the first 2 minutes Imokilly had scored 2 points from  Brian Lawton and Billy Dunne, on the puck out the Andrew Casey playing at full forward collected  the ball rounded his player and scored a goal. Again Imokilly responded with 3 unanswered pints  fromWill Leahy, Billy Dunne and Seamus Harnedy before UCC's Darragh Holmes struck for a point.  On the sixth minute of play Mark Coleman for Imokilly struck a point which was answered by a Dara Fitzgibbons point for UCC again followed by another for Will Leahy. On the 11th minute UCC  got a free and Rob O Shea duly pointed. 10 minutes in and the scoreline was Imokilly 0-7 to UCC's 1-2.The following 10 minutes saw the game continue at the same pace with both sides trading scores with UCC doing better in the second 10 minute spell. On the 11th minute Barra O Tuma had to bring down Andrew Casey who was bearing down on goal and from the resulting 21, Rob OShea scored another goal,  John Cashman pointed for Imokilly from the puck out which Darragh Holmes replied with another point for UCC the Seamus Harnedy  and Paudie O Sullivan got a point apiece before Andrew Casey struck for UCC with another point. 20 minutes gone in the game and the sides were level, Imokilly 0-10 to UCC's 2-4, UCC then scored 3 points in a row from Dara Fitzgibbon,Anthony Spillane and Shane Hegarty before  Imokilly  finished the half well with 5 points from play 2 from Mark O Keeffe 2 from Billy Dunne  and one from Brian Lawton leaving the sides going in at half time on a scoreline of Imokilly 0-15 to UCC's 2-7

On the restart of the secopnd half Imokillys John Cashman pointed followed by a Dara Fitzgibbon  point for UCC, ST Itas player Dara O Brien was introduced as a sub for David Lowney at corner back  for UCC such was the dominance of Paudie O Sullivan for Imokilly. But by Now Imokilly had the bit between their teeth and a point from from Brian Lawton, a great goal from Harnedy, 2pts from Leahy and another point from Harnedy saw them pull well ahead. Rob O Shea for UCC then pointed a free  followed  by their last point from play from Dara Fitzgibbon. From that point on Imokilly took control of the game and ponts from Leahy, Harnedy, Dunne and Cronin put enough distance between  the two teams. Imokilly then emptied the bench with Subs John Forde on for Mark O'Keeffe, 25mins Brian Mulcahy on for Seamus Harnedy,29mins  Shane O'Regan on for Paudie  O'Sullivan, Dillon Cahill on for Ian Cahill. UCC's  Andrew Casey goaled for them on the 30th with Will Leahy scoring a point  from a free to see Imokilly win out on a scoreline of Imokilly 1-26 (29) to UCC 3-10 (19) a ten point victory for Imokilly.

On Sat 30th in the Cork Senior Hurling Championship quarter-finals replay Imokilly hurlers faced Erins Own for the second time in 7 days. This game went pretty much the same as the first with Imokilly have a 5 point lead at one stage but Erins Own fought back and brought it down to 1 point before Imokilly managed to tighten up again and push on to win by a single point. Well done to the Imokilly panel who game away from Pairc Ui Rinn with the spoils by the narrowest of margins on the full-time whistle on a score of Imokilly 1-22 to Erins Own 4-12. They now go on to face Sarsfields in the  Semi Final after Sarsfields beat UCC on a scoreline of UCC 1-14 v Sarsfields 0-18 which was also another tight finish.

Cork Senior Hurling Championship Quarter Final Pairc Ui Rinn Sat 30th Sept 2017

In the Cork Senior Hurling Championship Semi final gane which took place in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Sunday 8th Oct Imokilly hurlers drew with Sarsfields on a final score of Imokilly 1-24 Sarsfields 2-21

Imokilly looked like the better side for much of the game. They started well and a goal from Cian Fleming nine minutes into the game put Imokilly ahead 1-6 to 0-3 by the 15th minute before Sars replied scoring 1-3 without reply. But Imokilly dug deep and with four in a row from William Leahy, Ian Cahill and Cian Fleming coming up to half time saw them lead 1-11 to 1-8 at the break.

Early in the second half Cian Fleming extended the lead to four, but again over the next few moments Sars draw level.  Imokilly sub Brian Mulcahy pointed soon after his introduction making it 1-19 to 1-15 before Eoghan Murphy and Daniel Kearney scored before Brian Mulcahy got his second point before Tadhg Óg Murphy goaled for Sarsfield to level the score.

Paudie O’Sullivan and Cian Fleming added 2 pts for Imokilly but then Sarsfields subs Aaron Myers and Luke Hackett scored for Sarsfields and went 1 pt up. Seamus Harnedy scored his second point of the day before Daniel Kearney put Sars back in front. 2017 Cork Senior Hurling Championship Final
Imokilly v Blackrock CSHC Final Pairc Ui Chaoimh Oct 22nd 2017

Well the year is almost over and Imokilly are Cork Senior Hurling Champions for 2017. A lot has been written and said about this team in the last few weeks so there is no need for me to say too much more on the matter. However we must sit, reflect and thank those involved for a great year for the Imokilly Senior Hurlers, who brought the title back to the Barony. On the Panel we had players from the following club’s Fr O'Neills, Cobh, Castlelyons, St Itas, Lisgoold, Castlemartyr, Cloyne, Aghada, Russell Rovers, Watergrasshill, Carrig na bhFearr along with our coaching staff, selectors and backroom staff from Aghada, Cobh, Castlemartyr, Lisgoold, Castlelyons and St Itas. Truly a representation of East Cork on the one panel.

Getting all these players and mentors in place takes a lot of work and Imokilly manager Fergal Condon from Aghada must take a lot of the credit for the work that went on behind the scenes in pulling this group of players together, apart from his obvious coaching skills, his attention to detail was paramount in putting everything in place, from who was doing water to reading stats after the games. The time commitment alone, and we must include the other mentors on the management team here, was huge. Daily he would call players, mentors, board members arranging pitches, games, training, physio, gear, etc. Of course, he denies it all saying it was a team effort and in that he is correct, it does take a huge team effort to manage a group of players from so many clubs but someone has to be in charge at the end of the day and Fergal took on that task in a very cool calm and collected manner.

Alongside Fergal we had selectors Ciaran Cronin from Lisgoold who was in constant touch with all players making the arrangements for training etc, selectors Jimmy Smiddy from Castlemartyr and Declan Barrett from Cobh both previous players with Imokilly when they won last and the final member of the selection panel, Sean Harnedy from St Itas who has an amazing understanding of the game and has a great rapport with the players on the panel. Each of these men brought their own unique set of skills to the table from coaching, man management and a winning mentality and self-belief which was passed onto all the players on the panel.

We must also include the following people for their hard work during the year. Physio, Conor Coleman from Youghal who managed to work miracles on tired legs, aching muscles and sore joints during the year in getting players ready for matches, his calm, professional manner in dealing with the players was as important as the physio he was providing. Adam McCarthy our Strength & Conditioning Coach who helped the lads stay in top shape during the long campaign must be complimented, as was proven on the field of play so many times during the year when in the last few minutes the players were able to stay going and get that vital score to draw or win the game. Oisin Counihan and Jack Norris, two lads who were always there in the background providing the management team with vital stats and score information during matches not an easy task at the best of times but both lads carried out this task in a very efficient manner allowing management make changes for games based on their insight and hard work.

We cannot forget the work the Imokilly Board did for this group during the year with Kieran McGann our direct link from the board to  the team who as always provided much needed advice and assistance during the year, Our Board Secretary Michael O'Brien who was on hand at every game to fill in team sheets, sub names, assist players with insurance queries etc on top of trying to accommodate fixtures (an impossible task at time) so club games wouldn’t clash with Imokilly matches, Our Chairman Richard Fitzgerald who provided stability and leadership from the board to the team and was not afraid to back up his words of encouragement with actions, providing gear etc, for the players as the year progressed.

To all the clubs who helped during the year providing facilities and refreshments for training, games and players meetings etc to clubs who fielded teams for practice games to the local press for covering our activities during the year from articles, photos, interviews, etc, we say thank you. Finally, to all the supporters in Imokilly we say a huge thank you for the support we received from everyone, it was simply amazing, and to the numbers of supporters who travelled to Tipperary, Waterford etc for practice games, to venues in Cork up to Pairc Ui Chaoimh for championship games we say well done and thank you. Throughout the year the different lads from the various clubs have played games with their clubs and the following night gone training and sometime playing in games with Imokilly, as a team the lads have been working and training hard with their clubs after work and sometimes before work and then arriving along to sessions with Imokilly. The dedication, determination and desire shown by these young players was and is remarkable and the clubs deserve huge thanks for all the support these players received from their own clubs during the year. Speaking with players and the mentors from Imokilly, one of the main driving forces behind everything they have done, this year was the support they received from supporters, both young and old alike, from the different clubs" it was immense". As PRO for Imokilly my job was a simple one and I was delighted to just sit back and report on everything that happened this year and my thanks for all the help I received from everyone during the year in covering this great year for Imokilly.

Imokilly started this year’s journey on Saturday the 6th May in Riverstown where they played Bishopstown winning out well when the final score was Bishopstown 0-12 vs 2-26 Imokilly. Their second outing was against UCC once again in Riverstown where they won out on a score line of Imokilly 1-26 vs 3-10 U.C.C. This saw them through to the Quarter Final against the team who had knocked Imokilly out at the same stage of the competition last year Erins Own. Again, the two teams lined out in Pairc Ui Rinn on 24th Sept and at the end of full time both sides were level on a score of Imokilly 2-19 vs 3-16 Erins Own. The replay was played a week later in Pairc Ui Rinn and this time Imokilly finally overcame Erins Own by the narrowest of margins on a score line of Imokilly 1-22 vs 4-12.  Then we had our first meeting in the Semi Final with another strong East Cork club Sarsfields in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Sunday 8th October where both sides ended level on a score of Imokilly 1-24 v Sarsfields 2-21 this led to yet another replay which was played in Pairc Ui Rinn on Sat 14th where Imokilly overcame a strong Sarsfield team by 4-17 to 4-10 to reach the Cork Senior Hurling Final in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Sunday the 22nd Oct where Imokilly beat Blackrock on a score line of Blackrock 0-18 to Imokilly 3-13 to become Cork Senior Hurling Champions for 2017.
